Fat Injections & Collagen
Collagen used to be widely used in cosmetic surgery, what is it? It is the main connective tissue protein found in animals and It is the most abundant protein in mammals, it makes up around 25% of the total protein content. It has been widely used in cosmetic surgery but the use of collagens is declining because of a fairly high level of allergic reactions (causes prolonged redness). Also because the majority of it is derived from cows there is a possible risk of contracting mad cows disease (BSE).
More and more people are turning to own body fat injections for cosmetic procedures ( also known as autologous fat transplantation).
Fat is taken from one part of your body and can be used to reshape the face, reduce frown lines, crow's feet and smile lines. It can also enhance definition of chin and cheeks. You should be aware however that fat injection is not permanent and may need to be repeated on a regular basis. The longevity of the procedure varies from patient to patient and type of procedure. This should be discussed in detail with your clinic/surgeon.
Method the fat to be used can be chosen from several areas, for example - thighs, buttocks, abdomen. This area is given a local anesthetic and an IV fluid is injected to make easier the collection of the fat. The fat cells are then retrieved through a small needle coupled to a syringe. This collected fat is then treated to remove excess fluids and re- injected into the required area. It is applied in thin strands and the area is overfilled as some of the fat is absorbed over the coming weeks after the process. For longer lasting effects patients normally receive 3 to 4 treatments over half a year. This probably excludes any benefits from flying to Brazil to specifically have this treatment. Although if having a Liposuction procedure at least one course of Fat injection could be carried out with the harvested fat. The procedure on its own normally takes less than an hour.
Some considerations: Longevity of the results varies significantly. It should not be injected into the breasts as it makes cancer detection more difficult. Some swelling and bruising for up to 48 hours can occur ( avoid strong sunlight during this period).
